What to do in Flores

Flores is the capital of the department of Peten. Is located on an island in the middle of Lake Peten Itza. The streets are cobble-stone and the houses and buildings have a colonial stile. There are a number of hotels and restaurants as well as had craft stores and night clubs. The best time to see the night life and the party stile of the people is during the Feria de Flores. It happens around the second week of January and every night there is a "Baile" (dance) in the salon. This feria (fair) lasts about 5 days and after partying all night one of the families in the island hosts any one on the street and serve tamales and punch and other foods for breakfast. This is called an alborada. The last day of the feria, they read what they call the "Muerto's Testament". This testament tells all that happened to the people of the island, good things and bad. The testament is read while walking around the island so all have a chance to hear it. Usually they tell really embarrassing things but most of the time they do inside kind of jokes that if you don't live there would not understand. Then during Easter when everyone is on vacation (everyone gets at least 1 week off for "Semana Santa" in Guatemala) there are parties every day and night. In the mornings there are beach volleyball tournaments and every one is at the lake and at night you can find the night clubs are full of locals and tourist. One of the best places to go dancing is Raices

From Flores you can take a boat to the Mirador, located in the peninsula of Tayasal, (this is where I used to live). From here you get a great view of the lake and of the island. You can also just take a tour around the lake or visit the local zoo Petencito (little Peten).
